Richard Port, family law associate at George Green LLP, has been awarded an MBE for his legal services to victims of domestic abuse in the 2022 New Year Honours List.

The New Year Honours list recognises the achievements of those in public life and those who have committed themselves to serve and help others within their communities. Those honoured comprise a small but wide ranging group of individuals across the United Kingdom.

The recognition comes for Richard after 8 years of hardworking and compassionate legal support for organisations and victims of domestic abuse in both Derbyshire and the Black Country area. Richard has worked closely with women’s refuges and domestic abuse charities to ensure that vulnerable people get the legal support that they need. Richard has been a keen advocate for victims of domestic abuse and fighting their cause in and outside of court.

Richard says “I am truly humbled to be receiving this honour from the Queen. I didn’t expect in my wildest dreams 8 years ago when I first got involved helping domestic abuse organisations and victims that eventually my efforts would be recognised and praised by the Queen. This honour comes after years of campaigning and supporting those who need help but unfortunately my work in tackling this problem faced by people from all walks of life has not ended and will not until the day such abuse is eradicated. It has been challenging and even at times difficult to fight when facing others who haven’t supported my cause but only see domestic abuse as a great talking point to others but put no effort or action in place to tackle it head on. I can only thank my friends and family for putting up with my long hours in making a difference. As well, I would like to thank George Green LLP. Before I joined, I was told that I would get all the support I needed to continue the work I had done alone for many years and they have honoured that promise. They are a firm dedicated in helping their clients whether through their expert legal knowledge or through their charitable contributions.
