What is Parental Responsibility?

Parental responsibility (PR) is the concept of the legal and practical duties in relation to children in their minority (and their property) in your care. This manifests in ways such as the child’s education, residence, name, religion, medical treatments, and any other decisions that affect their way of living.

You can still exercise your PR even if the children do not reside with you. This will obviously be to a lesser extent, but it still exists.

Only in scenarios of the court making an Adoption Order or Parental Order does a parent forfeit their PR or has it taken from them

How is it acquired?

PR is most commonly acquired by either being married to the mother at the time of the child’s birth or being named on the child’s birth certificate. However, it can also be granted by way of a Court Order.
