What is a Decree Nisi?

A Decree Nisi is a provisional order granted by the Court in divorce proceedings. It confirms that the Petitioner has satisfied the Court that they are entitled to a Divorce. It does not formally end the marriage and there is still opportunity to withdraw the petition and stop the divorce from proceeding if the parties decide to reconcile.

Once six weeks and one day have passed from the date of the Decree Nisi, the Petitioner is able to make their application for Decree Absolute.

The Decree Absolute completes the divorce and formally ends the marriage.

At George Green, our Family Solicitors will consider whether to delay the application for Decree Absolute until the finances have been dealt with, if this will be in the client’s best interests.

George Green offer fixed fees in relation to undefended Divorce proceedings.
