Seizure of 2,000 counterfeit "Squishies" toys

Wolverhampton Council’s Trading Standards team has seized more than 2,000 counterfeit “Squishies” toys after undertaking test purchases in Wolverhampton. The toys were transported in loose packaging from China.

The toys were tested for phthalates, which are industrial chemicals which can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system. There are concerns that young children could eat the products as they are scented.

It usually costs between £9 and £55 for eight Squishies, yet these toys were being sold for between £3.99 and £5.99. The items included manufacturing details and test certificates that were incorrect, as well as CE markings when the products were non-conformant.

The Council has issued warnings to local shops and market stallholders not to sell potentially counterfeit items.
