What is coercive control?

Coercive control is defined by Women’s Aid as “an act or a pattern of acts, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish or frighten their victim”. Domestic abuse is not always physical abuse. Coercive control is an example of a form of abuse.

Types of coercive control may include:

  • Isolating you from family or friends
  • Monitoring your whereabouts
  • Controlling what you wear, eat or do
  • Humiliating or degrading you
  • Repeatedly putting you down

There is no definitive list though as to what behaviours could be seen as being coercive or controlling. It can also feature physical violence.

Coercive control is a criminal offence.

Support can be sought from domestic abuse charities and the police. At George Green LLP our experienced family solicitors can also advise on protective injunctions; namely non molestation orders and occupation orders that can protect an individual who is being subjected to such abuse.

Coercive control may also be a consideration in court proceedings regarding the arrangements for children where one parents has been subjected to this form of abuse.
