Do I have to go to court to get a divorce?

The short answer is no, and in fact most divorcing couples do not ever need to attend court. The vast majority of divorces are uncontested and are dealt with by posting documents to the court for them to be considered and the divorce is then granted.

Court proceedings are only usually required where the couple cannot agree the split of their assets and even then are a last resort. Our family law solicitors are experts in negotiating settlements for our clients to avoid the need for court proceedings. We take the time to listen to what it important to our clients from the outset and work to find an amicable solution where ever possible. We also support and encourage our clients to consider alternatives such as mediation and arbitration, wherever possible.
