How long will a divorce take?

The time that it takes for a divorce to be completed will depend on the individual circumstances of each case.

Within the process though, there are two key waiting periods. Firstly, once the application for divorce has been issued, the applicant (or joint applicants) will need to wait 20 weeks before the conditional order can be made.

Secondly, once the conditional order has been made the final order of divorce cannot be applied for until 6 weeks and 1 day have passed.

Several factors may impact the length of a divorce though. One of the key factors will be any financial matters that need to be resolved. A divorce may be paused whilst financial matters are finalised. A lack of cooperation of one party or court delays could also have an impact.
