What is domestic abuse?

There is no one definition of domestic abuse or violence that is universally accepted. Domestic abuse can comprise a wide range of acts or behaviours and can cover a range of domestic relationships.

Domestic violence or abuse can include (but is not limited to):

1) Physical violence;
2) Emotional abuse;
3) Coercive or controlling behaviour; for example in respect of finances;
4) Degrading behaviour;
5) Sexual violence;
6) Isolation; or
7) Harassment or threatening behaviour.

It covers abuse between married or cohabiting couples but also includes abuse between family members or non-cohabiting couples.

There are various methods and procedures in place that attempt to protect victims from being subjected to abuse. For example, an application can be made to the Family Courts for a Non Molestation Order; an injunction preventing the perpetrator from molesting the victim or any relevant child.
