Waste Company Fined £13,334 for breach of Environmental enforcement notices

On 5 March 2018, waste processing company, Armabridge Ltd trading as “Skip-It Torbay” pleaded guilty to two offences of failing to comply with separate enforcement notices contrary to Regulation 38(3) of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 and was fined a total of £13,334 and ordered to pay £3,070 in costs to the Environment Agency at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court.

In June 2015, an Environment Agency officer discovered asbestos contamination in a pile of approximately 3,200 tonnes of residual waste at the Skip-It Torbay site. In January 2016, it was found that Armabridge Ltd was storing approximately 2,000 tonnes of asbestos contaminated waste at a second site.

Armabridge Ltd has been given until 30 September 2018 to safely dispose of waste from both sites.

George Green’s Regulatory and Licensing Partner, James Lowe stated “The Environment Agency has once again demonstrated that it will not hesitate to pursue companies who breach their environmental obligations.  Environmental offenders are likely to be required to take steps to remediate sites that are affected by breaches of environmental legislation”.
