Plastic manufacturer fined £1million after death of a delivery driver

Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd recently pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined £1 million.

A delivery driver was struck by a fork lift truck while he was making a delivery at Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd site which resulted in his death.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd had failed to properly manage transport in its yard area, which meant both employees and members of the public were exposed to the risks of moving vehicles. The investigation also found that the systems of work did not include an adequate traffic management plan. There was no real separation of vehicles and pedestrians, no protected walkways, and no clear signage or barriers to ensure workers were safe.

George Green’s Regulatory and Licensing Partner, James Lowe stated “employers must ensure that they put in place robust health and safety systems, especially in relation to traffic management in areas used by heavy goods vehicles and other vehicles.”
