PLASTIC BAG LEVY TO BE EXTENDED

It is anticipated that the 5p charge for plastic bags will be extended to apply to small shops as part of new plans for the environment.

Theresa May will this week give a major speech on the environment following concerns about a growing ‘throwaway culture’.

It is likely that a consultation will take place on the removal of the exemption that allows retailers with fewer than 250 employees to provide bags to consumers without charge.

The government has highlighted the success of the levy by confirming that there has been a 90% decline in the use of plastic bags since its introduction.

The Prime Minister has stated that the government would take action against the ‘profligate’ use of natural resources in its 25 year plan.
