Local company convicted of corporate manslaughter

Master Construction Products (Skips) Limited, previously known as MCP Skips Limited recently appeared in Birmingham Crown Court to be sentenced for corporate manslaughter. The Company admitted the breach along with a separate health and safety offence following the death of its employee Safi Qais Khan.

Mr Khan was employed at the Tyseley based factory, when he became entangled in a waste sorting machine in 2015. Despite the best efforts of a colleague to administer CPR, Mr Khan died as a result of crushing injuries.

The Court heard evidence that the machine was lacking essential parts to protect against entrapment and that there was no emergency stop button in place. Training on the machine was minimal and those responsible for repairing it had no formal qualifications or training.

The Company was fined £255,000 and is now in liquidation. Company Director, Jagbir Singh, who was responsible for health and safety at MCP, was given a 12 month custodial sentence, suspended for 2 years; a 300 hour community service order; and has been disqualified from being a company director for 8 years. He was further ordered to pay £11,500 himself towards prosecution costs.
