Fine of £60,000 after dead mouse discovered in nursery kitchen

The owners of Positive Steps Children’s Day Nursery in Shellingford pleaded guilty to five food hygiene offences at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on 10 April 2018. They were ordered to pay a fine of £60,000, costs of £1,851.05, and a victim surcharge of £170; which is the largest fine to date for a prosecution in these circumstances by The Vale of White Horse District Council.

The concerns arose after Environmental Health Officers from the Council undertook an unannounced inspection on 16 May 2017.  Rodent droppings were found near food, on top of work surfaces close to chopping boards, and close to a baby bottle steriliser.  A dead mouse was also found in the kitchen.

The kitchen was closed immediately due to the risks to the health and safety of the children and members of staff. The nursery was permitted to re-open after a follow-up inspection on 19 May 2017.
