Official figures have been released this week confirming that a total of 13 couples started online divorce applications on Christmas Day 2018.

A total of 455 online applications were submitted during the Christmas and New Year period in total.

It is often suggested that pressures can build up over the Christmas period when spouses are spending an extended period of time together. The financial pressure of Christmas can also trigger problems whilst some couples simply decide to wait until Christmas is over to start taking any steps towards a divorce.

The modernisation programme that introduced online applications last year has faced several criticisms in the last year since its introduction, including issues over technology and the speed and scope of the reforms.
