Can I have a say in where my child goes to school?

Anyone who has parental responsibility for a child should have the opportunity to be involved in key decisions for that child. This will include decisions in respect of their health, any changes to their name and in respect of their education.

As such, both parents with parental responsibility should have the opportunity to be involved in deciding where their child will go to school. This will be the case when the child first starts school as well as any subsequent changes as they grow up.

Whilst a lot of separated parents will be able to discuss and agree where their child goes to school between the two of them this will not always be the case.

If parents are unable to agree the school arrangements for their child they may want to consider attending Mediation. Within Mediation the parents would meet with an independent, trained Mediator who will attempt to help facilitate an agreement being reached.

If a parent is concerned that the other parent may attempt to change the child’s school without their consent and is opposed to the move they can apply to the court for a prohibited steps order.
