HSE carrying out Covid compliance spot checks - is your business compliant?

The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed that it is undertaking spot checks and inspections on all types of businesses in all areas to ensure they are COVID-secure and to check that the measures in place comply with government guidance.

HSE is also working closely with local authorities, to provide them with assistance in the sectors they regulate such as hospitality and retail.

HSE Inspectors are making COVID-secure checks part of their normal role and are visiting workplaces during the pandemic. Given the importance of Covid security, HSE has stated that it is trying to reach as many workplaces as possible nationally during the pandemic. As such, it is also working with trained and approved partners to deliver the spot check calls and visits.

It is possible that your business will receive contact from HSE or an inspection, even if you have never been visited by HSE before. Those visiting premises will be able to provide you with identification from their business and a letter of authorisation from HSE.

HSE has made it clear that any refusal to participate in the spot checks could lead to enforcement action being taken against the business. HSE has wide powers of investigation and enforcement and the penalties following conviction for breaches of health and safety laws can be significant.

If your organisation is contacted by the local authority or HSE in respect of its COVID security measures or by PHE in the event of an outbreak, our Regulatory Partner, James Lowe is able to assist and has considerable experience in this area. He is available on 07833 240 400 for a free telephone consultation.
