Maintenance Increased after Ex Wife makes Poor Financial Decisions

When Mr and Mrs Mills divorced 15 years ago Mrs Mills was awarded the lion’s share of the capital of the marriage.  She received a lump sum of £230,000 and spousal maintenance of £1,100 per month.

Mrs Mills invested the money unwisely in property ventures that failed and now lives in rental accommodation.  The Court of Appeal has increased her maintenance to £1,441 per calendar month.  She will enjoy this level of financial support from her former husband for the rest of her life (unless a further order is made).  Needless to say Mr Mills is unhappy with the decision. His barrister has called for a change to the law to limit maintenance and encourage financial independence after divorce.
