If you are reading this you are probably considering applying to George Green LLP for a training contract. Hopefully this short note will give you a brief insight into what life is like at the firm….both professionally and socially.
So what will you be doing on a daily basis? One of the good things about training with a firm this size is that you are exposed to a wide variety of work, from drafting wills and LPAs to assisting with the due diligence on a multi-million pound transaction. As a trainee you’ll also be expected to do your fair share of unglamorous work and, like all members of the team, make the occasional cup of tea.
No matter what you are doing you are always made to feel like a valued member of the team. Given the size of the firm you will find that everyone knows each other and there will always be someone available to help if you are unsure of anything. You will, of course, be required to take an appropriate amount of responsibility for the work you do from an early stage and you will also be expected to be able to cope with a variety of problems as and when they arise. You certainly won’t be spoon-fed but, equally, you won’t be left to feel like you’re drowning.
The firm offers a broad range of services which allows trainees to gain experience in a variety of different practice areas. Whilst trainees generally complete four six-month seats, the firm is willing to be flexible if you have shown an interest in a particular field. You can usually spend your final seat in the department you wish to qualify into with a view to hitting the ground running.
What are the clients like? Due to the location of firm, it counts numerous owner-managed businesses amongst its clients, many of whom are still heavily involved in manufacturing; however, the reputation of the firm also attracts more high-profile, “blue chip” clients. You will be expected to engage with clients from an early stage and start developing long-term relationships that can be built on throughout your career.
Trainees are encouraged to build contacts with other professionals from the outset and will be given invaluable opportunities to attend a variety of networking events. In the past, some of our trainees have been actively involved in the Birmingham Trainee Solicitor Society, the Wolverhampton Junior Lawyers Division and Future Alliance for the Black Country and have continued to reap the benefits of the contacts they have made following qualification.
In terms of career progression, the firm is very keen to encourage organic growth, with three of the last four trainees being offered positions upon qualification. For those of you with aspirations for partnership, several of the current partners trained with the firm and, in the not too distant past, one former trainee was made partner only two years after qualification. Whilst this isn’t the norm, it shows that high-fliers can really make their mark.
What’s the social life like? It’s unlikely that Cradley Heath would be high on anyone’s list of glamorous nightspots but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ample opportunities for socialising. There are regular nights out planned in Birmingham and you can usually find someone to share a lunchtime beer with at the local pub.
Trainees are also encouraged to get involved with the firm’s social committee which is responsible for organising the Christmas and summer parties as well as day-trips, fundraising events and after-work socials.
George Green might not be "city" but it should seriously be considered as a "David" alternative to the national "Goliaths".
